Opie would wait until the last second to sign for the sole purpose of reminding everyone there how important he was. And he would only sign short contracts so he could do it more often. He understood his actual, comedic worth was lower than if he hadnt even been there. And once Ant had formed chemistry with so many comedians or otherwise funny people, it became obvious that realistically, almost anyone in their circle could have replaced Opie and it would have made the show better. Opie could tell and he must have felt insecure all the time, so when it came time to sign he had all this grabage circling in his brain. And now, his one moment where he could hold everybody back, he was going to make it known that he 'allowed' them to keep working.
